Dangers of a Low-fat Diet

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

If you are on low-fat diet, I can assume that you are struggling with weight loss.

If that is you, please read on.

Firstly, a low fat diet can be very unhealthy and dangerous.

Studies have shown that adults and children who drink low-fat milk gain more weight than those who drink full-cream milk. Full-cream milk is more filling and nutritious. It is true that low-fat milk contains less calories, however, this tends to trigger more cravings in food afterwards.

Healthy fats are essential for our health - that is why there are fats called “essential” like omega 3 fatty acids.

The only fats you must avoid are man-made fats such as:

Fried oils

Refined vegetable oils

Vegetable shortening

Margarines

They are not found in nature and highly processed. They are linked to heart disease, fatty liver, obesity, psoriasis, acne, leaky gut issues and more.

When you deprive yourself of healthy fats, fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) will also be lacking. These vitamins need the presence of fat for proper digestion.

Without healthy fats, skin and hair is prone to dryness and itchiness, the brain loses memory, digestion slows down and sugar cravings increase.

Did you know that healthy fats can contribute to weight loss and help to manage a healthy weight? Healthy fats (such as those coming from olive oil, almonds, walnuts, salmon, lamb, avocado) help to reduce our appetite and have a sensation of fullness. That is why the Ketogenic diet (or high-fat diet) is one of those diets recommended for weight loss. However, this diet does not always work (or is not sustainable) for everybody. Personalisation of a diet is necessary.

Many people on a low-fat diet are gaining more weight and struggling with their health and well-being. It’s a vicious cycle.
